Mapuche artist, born in Chile, Sebastián Calfuqueo uses video, photography, performance, installation, and sculpture to poetically research the prejudices and paradoxes exposed in Chilean society. He reconstructs the urban plots of the marginalization of the Mapuche, on the outskirts of the city of Santiago, revealing how their work - subordinate, domestic, informal or security activities - was carried out in precarious conditions. Racism marked the experiences of his childhood, as his grandparents were offensively called Indians. In the video Buscando a Marcela (Looking for Marcela), the artist encounters his stunt double and his female identity in the city. Mirar (To gaze) is a series of photographs with which Sebastián shows us evidence of their similarity. Asentamiento (Settlement) gathers films in which the protagonists, Mapuche people who live in the city of Santiago, tell their family relationships and talk about the diasporic and identity processes that weave their experiences. His entire artistic practice addresses from a critical perspective the idea of an identity constructed through the race, gender, and social strata.
